The Oneness of Mind and Deed
Zhi Xing He Yi
The idiom is a foundational concept in Chinese philosophy, particularly within Neo-Confucianism. It is most translated as the "Unity of Knowledge and Action."
The Meaning
Knowledge, Awareness, or Understanding
Action, Practice, or Conduct
To combine into one; Unity
The Origin
The concept was famously championed and refined by the Ming Dynasty philosopher Wang Yangming in the early 16th century.
At the time, the dominant school of thought (led by the teachings of Zhu Xi) suggested that one must exhaustively study the world and "investigate things" to gain knowledge before one could act virtuously.
Wang Yangming found this approach too detached and intellectual. He argued that this separation led to people who possessed vast book knowledge but lacked moral character or practical ability. He proposed "zhi xing he yi" as a way to bridge the gap between the mind and the physical world.
Key Quote
Knowledge is the purpose of action, and action is the work of knowledge. Knowledge is the beginning of action, and action is the completion of knowledge.
